We don’t blog just to be famous

Category: By DuNi

Blogging is an art.  It is sometimes a passion for the poet beneath the skin.  It is harsh when the truth is at stake in the battle for pride and reputation.  It is education for those who are willing to learn.  It is also emulation for those who are willing to lead by example.

It is also a responsibility.  Blogging is not just about everyday journals or ramblings, it is also a way to understand and feel around you.  It is sometimes filled with emotion, sometimes dealt with compassion, and sometimes foster relations.  It may not be a way of life but it might be a defining moment on things you decide in your years of existence.

So, why do we blog?  This is not something to show off to everyone so that we can have our fifteen minutes of fame.  This is not to show you our prowess in constructive English.  And this is not to let you know we are wise and an “advisory channel” when counsel is needed most.

We let out our angst in the hopes of understanding what was misunderstood before.  We write some of our secrets, opened a little bit of our closets, so that people would have a little bit of idea on who we are.  We tell you stories, because we wanted you to know that there are places beyond the reaches of the four corners of your room, or cubicle for some, and your eighteen inch monitor.  We are like your old but wise granddad mesmerizing you with his decade-old stories of wonder during our younger days.

Lastly, we blog to create social awareness.  It is not just to get attention even though sometimes we get more attention than we deserve.  It is not to get famous but to enlighten some of us on important things that escape us as we thread on to the future, as we devise ways to achieve our dreams.  We don’t blog just to be famous, we write things because we want you to get the point.  And if you didn’t get it, at least we did our part in orienting you into this world full of pretenses.

kuya, may mga inaayunan ako at merong hinde hehehe. ang definition ng blogging for me depends on what type of person or who is blogging. not all are really blogging to create social awareness, and di rin lahat ng nagbablog, may sense yung binablogs. siguro let us just say na lang na when we blog, we should also be responsible with our bloggings. like if we blog about our dark secret, wag kang mang-away ng tao pag natsismis ka eh gusto mo yun eh.

pero agree ako sayo, marami nagbablog kc gusto maging sikat or they always have this hidden agenda. mayron din yung gusto laging napapag-usapan.

basta ako, frustrated na artista or showbiz kc ako eh, kaya kahit dito man lang sa multiply, maging kashowbiz showbiz ako hahahaha. joke.

yun nga kuya, kc parang walang exact definition ang blogging, it depends on what type of blogger are you heheheheh (talagang pinilit eh, defensive kc) hahahaha

hahhaahha, ganito epekto pag di nakakaonline sa opisina.hahhaha
  30. DuNi @ March 25, 2009 at 7:55 PM
masyado kasi broad ang definition ng blogging ngayon...
pero noon ang definition lang nito ay ONLINE JOURNAL, tapos nag-evolve na sa kung anu-anong istilo ng bawat blogger... pero kung purist ka, you consider your blog as a work of art also and not just merely ramblings of someone who has party hangovers...

wag mong ipilit dahil ako ay sumusuporta sa pag-aalis ng uri(class less society) kaya hindi ako naniniwala na may karapat-dapat na magharing uri kahit sa mundo ng pagba-blog... wahahaha...

I agree that there's no definite reason why people blog. To each his own. The act is driven mainly by the desire for self-expression. From there, other ulterior motives or vested interests could be had by the bloggers. But we can't fault bloggers for their own reasons why they blog. It's the new medium made available by our time and technology. And largely, it's human nature to use a medium available for their purposes. I think the "issue," if we call it that, is akin to why writers write. They write for varied reasons. I know one person who blogs/writes because that's what defines his being. Some write due to "creative outburst," to use the term of Boyet Fajardo. Others do to release their opinions and persuade people. If they can be able to express themselves and get money from it, why persecute them? And if they are being read by people and get some fame out of it, what's wrong with that? It's their prerogative to do so and damned lucky they are indeed if they belong to the latter cases.

It stinks of moral arrogance if we judge bloggers for what they write and their style of expression. After all, blogs do not speak entirely of the bloggers and vice-versa. If we really don't like the personality of some bloggers (based on what they post at least), it can be remedied simply by not reading them.

I know a significant number of bloggers who are being read somehow even if their entries are mostly bereft of substance. On the other hand, I know some who write with substance but, sadly, are not afforded with enough interaction and readers. But who am I to say that my opinion of "substance" is right? It's my personal taste and, to quote another blogger: "Everything is subjective. One man's trash is another man's literature." I agree to some extent that blogging comes with responsibility, especially if one blogs publicly. But then again, who is that somebody of high moral ground to censor that? If we call it an art, then it should be a matter of self-regulation. Blogging is a risk one employs upon his own security or even integrity. If one chooses to disgrace himself in his own blogs, then maybe we should enjoy the free entertainment if we can still stand it. Otherwise, let's leave him alone. If he's aggravating somebody else through his blogs, that's probably another story.

On a personal note, the reason why I blog is still "evolving". Mainly, writing is one of my passions and I think I can express myself better through it. I joined Multiply because it has promised itself to be a better social networking site (I agree so far) and my former officemates egged me on to. Early on, I only posted rants and surveys that interested no one else but myself. Currently, my ramblings can be categorized as social commentaries. I take that I can educate myself more by writing down my thoughts and by listening to what others think. But I still write personal shits and nonsense whines because... just because. And sometimes, it's the only way really to ease the load. Nevertheless, I've realized the vast potential of blogging and I tried some of that. For once, we promoted (actually we still do) a quite obscure town in Cebu and I've seen for myself how we can make things happen by blogging. I don't earn anything at all for my blogs here. But if there's a chance for that, it's hypocritical for me not to take it. I also need to pay for our laundrywoman. =)

Oppsie, that's long...sorry dude got carried away. It's a rather relevant post you have here. I join the cause for a more interactive and vibrant blogging community in the Philippines. It's ideal that we Filipino bloggers should aspire to contribute some positive changes through our blogs. But it's a tall order if we really have to think about it, so let's just enjoy blogging while we can. Or whatever. Viva las Filipinas! ;)

  48. DuNi @ March 26, 2009 at 9:38 AM
this is also one of the reasons why i had this piece. we should be able to create an opportunity for a positive contributions through our site, and not just use it as an avenue for "creative outburst" in some ways. although i am not condemning each and everyone's style or reasons, i was only concerned for those who use the medium for their sometimes hidden but opportunistic agenda.

you wrote your comment nicely, friend, and that is also one of my points. positive comments enhances positive interaction. i could understand you getting carried away because you are passionate. and yes, let's enjoy blogging. we know how to be contented and have fun right?

    na nosebleed din ako hehe...

  50. DuNi @ March 26, 2009 at 9:51 AM
blogging has the power to change, mostly for the better, but unfortunately some uses it for personal gains. although sometimes there is nothing illegal with that, it becomes negative when you use the medium for the wrong reasons
  51. DuNi @ March 26, 2009 at 10:01 AM

@ mark andre: yes you are right, we have to send the message accross. positive messages

last but not the least pia: sikat ka. but i dont need to enumerate. hahaha baka kung saan mapunta. nakakatakot maging famous eh. most famous people were prosecuted or assasinated. and, sa araw ka kasi mag OL.

yah yah yah some people blog for the fame even if their articles are not works of art, more so if their posts are just a mechanical copy-and-paste show. sometimes, life is just not fair. other people's garbage may be other people's literature as what @swerver suggested. blogging then cannot be gauged by what we write but by the taste of those who read who. am i correct there? i'm not perfect.

I was super busy yesterday kaya napaka brief ng comment ko in this regard...

    Now i've got time:
Well, my mom could attest that all i do in life is write. They would know my silliest secrets from diaries scattered around the living room since i was young (in primary sch. in fact) and 'mind you, "diaries" -- cuz i don't settle with just one... i've got lots of notes sorted whether it's for sharing or just for myself... perhaps that's where they've got the concept of advanced posting -- be it private, network, per individual, or for everyone... --- not from me of course -- but from people who do the same which i suppose, half of the population.

I write almost everything. A pen and a nicely bound journal makes my day. But I could settle with a grocery receipt if i didn't bring one. How convenient, cuz now, people got their laptops and pc's that made it all easier. People who get calloused writing almost everything would find typing a lot easier.I for one who worked as an admin assistant for 6 yrs now really find it difficult to write in a paper. My fingers ache much, but typing is a lot better.

I could write about facts and fiction. It depends on my mood. There are times, I write for friends and for conversation -- as you may know, I do not ym. I found lots of friends over the blog world and it has been easy for me to correspond over threads.

I blog about the most amazing mall i saw some place in Asia... and i would also blog about the latest stunt Gretchen made over SNN.

I would blog about how hurt i've been -- i would blog about how Marian Rivera ticks me off.

It's the mood that makes me blog.

and if I didn't have a laptop... i'm sure i would have written all those in my journal too...

i am not a good writer... but i talk a lot..

Not everyone around me talks back though.... so i'd rather write =D

    seriously on this blog,

same thing with blogging, di dapat nagkakalat lang
