The Rite of Passage
We went to the hospital today, where my boy has just completed the usual “rite of passage”. The procedure, circumcision, done with pride by many young boys, is practically removing some of the foreskin in the penis. I can see that there was no trace of nervousness in his part, since it was him who said he wanted to be a doctor someday so I guess he knows how to endure some pain.
We were relaxed while me and my son were waiting for the doctor within the Emergency Room in the hospital, even exchanging pleasantries with the pretty nurse attendant on duty…
NURSE: kapatid mo?
ME: hinde…
NURSE: pinsan?
ME: hinde…
NURSE: pamangkin?
ME: hinde… anak ko…
NURSE: 10 years old ka lang nung nagka-anak ka na!?
ME: hahaha… hindi naman… 21 na ako nun…
NURSE: ilan taon ka na ba?
ME: 32 na…
NURSE: hindi halata… mukha ka lang 25…
The conversation with the nurse ended as they prepped the room where they would circumcise my dear baby boy who was fast becoming a teen already. I never told him how painful my experience so he just have to find out for himself how excruciating is to undergo this ritual.
DOC: Ang laki nyan ah…(referring to the penis) ilan taon na siya?
ME: 10 years old doc…
DOC: laking bulas nya ah… (and then said these words to the male assistant) “...'tang kanaku kapitna ya mu ing size.."
I let out a laugh. I think what he meant was that during the time he was circumcised his penis was half size of what he has seen in my boy. I let out that laugh because I was in the same predicament with the doctor. And I let out a laugh again as I saw three protruding pubic hairs already! He is slowly becoming a man! And I will miss all those times we were playing around, watching TV, bonding through PS2 and his Nintendo DS, playing in TimeZone G4 while in Manila
My boy is now a man… technically. I felt a mixture of emotions as I came to realize that within the years to come there will be a change in his perception of things. He might be less interested in the things we’ve done together throughout the years. He will be venturing into an exploration and discovery of certain things, some of them would be done even without my knowledge. It’s a sad thing to accept that our children starts to mature, but I have to accept that he is not a boy anymore, because even the squeaky voice is slowly starting to change into a baritone-ish noise.
My boy is now starting to become a man.
I guess I have to delete all my porn collections in my hard drive…

xhit man, ambilis ng taon, he is 5 now, parang kahapon lang dumidede pa.
five years from now or less he'll be circumcised too,
another more five years, he'll have girlfriends...
waaa then marriage... or kids... waaa lola na....

you really have to be happy for each of the moments,
passing lang lahat e, ang ngayon, nagiging kahapon,
pag naghello na ang bukas... ;-) tsktsk
